kankyo Cafe: Interactive social dialogue education using generative AI and augmented reality

Cross-Cutting Themes

The interactive social dialogue “Kankyo Cafe” is a form of open dialogue education in which active scientists and engineers share their research on specific themes such as climate change, ecosystem conservation and disaster prevention, and citizens share their own experiences in their daily lives. The aim is promoting voluntary mutual learning between citizens and scientists. The “Environmental Cafe” is a form of social communication (environmental communication) that involves interaction (dialogue and collaboration) between citizens (including high school students and university students) from a wide range of fields and professions. We think about “what it means to be human” and “how we should live” together, based on an understanding of the relationship between nature, society (the economy) and life (people) (symbiosis, cycles, diversity). The term “environment” includes not only nature but also people's society, history and culture.

This method has been used for over 10 years to provide a place for youth, citizens and Indigenous people to share their knowledge and experiences on specific themes, regardless of age, gender, nationality or sector, to promote mutual understanding of the issues and benefits of open science and to organize opinions and thoughts based on their respective backgrounds.

This method also makes it possible to contribute to the expansion of common knowledge and the elimination of the digital divide among participants by welcoming a pseudo-personality created using generative AI as one of the participants, and it is a method that promotes the exchange of opinions based on scientific evidence.

This method has already been implemented for over 3,000 people in the Asia-Pacific region, and more than 300 participants have completed the basic skills training using this method. It has also been introduced in high schools, universities and vocational training facilities, and it also functions as a platform for sharing experiences and skills related to common, open scientific knowledge to promote sustainable development.
