Soapbox Science

Cross-Cutting Themes

Soapbox Science is a novel public outreach platform for promoting women and non-binary scientists and the science they do. Established in 2011 by Prof Seirian Sumner and Prof Nathalie Pettorelli, the initiative transforms public spaces into arenas for learning and scientific discourse, inspired by the tradition of London's Hyde Park Speaker's Corner. By eliminating intermediaries and traditional presentation tools, Soapbox Science enables direct engagement between scientists and the public, fostering an environment where curiosity is encouraged, and scientific inquiry is accessible to all. It provides women and non-binary scientists the chance to share with the public their latest discoveries, answer questions from the audiences, display interactive scientific activities, and share their passions and experiences of being a scientist.

Since its inception, Soapbox Science has featured over 3,000 scientists and reached an audience exceeding 350,000 individuals worldwide. The initiative has expanded its reach beyond the United Kingdom and has organized events in 86 cities around the world since 2011. The impact of Soapbox Science has been recognized through several accolades, including commendation by the UK Prime Minister in 2015 and the awarding of a Silver Medal from the Zoological Society of London in 2016.
