2023 International Day against violence and bullying at school: No place for fear

In 2019, 193 UNESCO Member States unanimously established the International Day against Violence and Bullying at School Including Cyberbullying, recognizing that school-related violence in all its forms is an infringement of children and adolescents’ rights to health and to education.
School violence is widespread, can be physical, psychological, and sexual, and includes gender-based violence, bullying, and cyberbullying.
This year, UNESCO calls to end violence and promote good mental health in schools to ensure learners learn and thrive in safe and supportive spaces under the theme: No place for fear: ending school violence for better mental health and learning.

International Day against violence and bullying at school including cyberbullying
School violence – including bullying, cyberbullying, and gender-based violence – has severe and long-lasting effects on the mental health, well-being, and education of children and adolescents.
Evidence shows that experiences at school such as violence amongst peers and bullying have been associated with anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Learners facing or witnessing school violence are more likely to miss school, have lower grades, and even drop out of school.
Preventing and responding to school violence is critical to make sure that all learners feel protected, safe, and ultimately learn better. Join us in commemorating this International Day and learn more about our work in fostering safe and supportive learning environments.
