September 8, 2023, Kabul 鈥 UNESCO is commemorating 2023 International Literacy Day in Afghanistan.
Since 1967, International Literacy Day (ILD) has been celebrated every year around the world to remind people of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society.
This year鈥檚 International Literacy Day was celebrated worldwide under the theme 鈥楶romoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies.鈥
The commemoration was an opportunity of joining efforts, including towards building peaceful societies and contributing to generating interest and motivation in people to further develop their literacy and numeracy skills, with the aim to raise awareness on the importance of literacy and numeracy and to advocate for the right of education in Afghanistan.
Commemorating the International Day in Afghanistan, UNESCO, in its capacity as chair of the Platform for Youth and Adult Literacy and Basic Education (YALBE) in Afghanistan, conducted a month-long literacy awareness and advocacy campaign comprising TV and radio spots that are broadcasted nationally on 57 national radio and 8 TV channels and billboards that are installed across 29 provinces of Afghanistan.
UNESCO's community-based literacy classes are currently reaching over 25,000 illiterate and semi-literate male and female learners in 20 provinces across Afghanistan. More information about UNESCO鈥檚 community-based literacy classes in Afghanistan can be found here.
