Biosphere Experience

Corentin de Chatelperron describes himself as a "lifestyle explorer". His quest? To find a desirable and sustainable way of life for the future, based on the low-tech approach.

10 years ago, Corentin de Chatelperron founded the Low-tech Lab to identify innovative, affordable and sustainable technologies and know-how. He wants to meet the needs of a healthy urban lifestyle. Producing energy, food, recycling waste... his association documents and shares its discoveries for free via the Internet, books and films.

In 2018, the Biosphere program was launched. It experiments with a combination of low-tech innovations on a floating platform in Thailand. In 2023, a second experiment is conducted with Belgian designer Caroline Pultz. It takes place in an arid environment, in the Mexican desert. Cultivation of mushrooms, plants and algae, use of solar energy, bio-sourced materials, use of closed-circuit water... Covering an area of 60m², this new Biosphere's ecosystem is a habitat that generates resources rather than waste. Dozens of experts have been mobilized for this experiment: doctors, nutritionists, living specialists, ecological cooks...

Experimentation in an urban environment

New challenge: to apply the low-tech approach to a dense urban environment in the Paris area. The aim: to design a lifestyle that produces no waste, cuts water consumption by a factor of 10, and meets the UN's 2050 targets for greenhouse gas emissions. A low-tech futurist apartment will be fitted out, linked to an ecosystem involving some twenty players from different fields: larvae farming to recycle organic waste, mushroom and sprout cultivation for food, biogas production for cooking, a fablab for producing and repairing objects, a collaborative supermarket, an organic farm, and so on. For 4 months, this forward-looking yet realistic way of life will be put to the test and documented in order to reflect on the city's future.
The experiment will take place in the summer 2024, and will give residents the opportunity to take part via a participatory science program.
