Expert Hub for Memory of the World in Africa: Call for applications

The UNESCO Memory of the World (MoW) Programme was created in 1992 with the objectives of safeguarding documentary heritage, promote its accessibility, and raise public awareness of its significance and its need of preservation. The International MoW Register showcases documentary heritage which, through their world significance and symbolism, draw the attention of decision makers and the general public to a much larger need for preservation and promotion of our common heritage.

Despite the significance of Africa’s cultural heritage, documentary heritage from Africa remains invisible. There is little awareness among the Member States about the importance of documentary heritage as only 19 countries have established a National MoW Committee out of 54. Only 26 out of the 426 inscriptions on the International Register for MoW are from Africa, representing only 5% of the global collections. The Regional MoW Register for Africa is yet to be established.

So as to support the National Memory of the World Committees and memory institutions across Africa to preserve, provide access and promote documentary heritage, UNESCO is establishing an Expert Hub for Memory of the World in AfricaThe Hub will be comprising of 20 experts specialized in the preservation, access and promotion of documentary heritage from African countries, who would volunteer their time to conduct trainings and Memory of the World activities across the continent.
