Greener Pastures: Co-restoring endangered Posidonia australis seagrass and White's Seahorse in south-eastern Australia

Human activities and climate change threaten seagrass meadows and the White's seahorse that depend on this habitat in the most urbanised estuaries of Australia, around Sydney. These meadows are also very important for climate change resilience, coastal recreation and fisheries.
Seahorse Hotels
A group of scientists is combining two innovative species recovery techniques. They are the restoration of Posidonia seagrass meadows using naturally-detached fragments of the seagrass, collected by beach-going citizen scientists and the construction of temporary seahorse habitats called 'Seahorse Hotels'.
In the first year of the project, 15 seahorse hotels were installed alongside restored Posidonia habitat at Gamay Botany Bay in Sydney. 100 seahorses were reared in captivity in these habitats and released.
By the end of 2024, this association hopes to install 45 more seahorse hotels and release 300 White seahorses alongside restored seagrass habitat.
