Information Session on the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP)
ICTP is located in Trieste, Italy and serves as a hub for a broad spectrum of research activities in multiple branches of theoretical physics. These include condensed matter physics, high-energy physics, mathematical physics, cosmology, and more. Moreover, it facilitates collaborative projects, conferences, workshops, and schools that bring together researchers from all over the world.
Over the years, ICTP has played a crucial role in supporting and nurturing scientific talent, promoting international collaboration, and advancing theoretical physics in regions that might otherwise have limited access to such opportunities. It has gained recognition as a global hub for scientific exchange and cooperation, making significant contributions to the progress of physics and related disciplines worldwide. Additionally, ICTP has contributed to the establishment of Centres of Excellence in different regions, which are under the auspices of UNESCO.
This information session aims to showcase how ICTP promotes global scientific collaboration and knowledge exchange. It will focus on how ICTP cultivates scientific excellence and fosters innovation across various fields. It will also be an opportunity to discuss how ICTP can help narrow disparities in scientific access and resources, especially in underserved regions. Additionally, success stories and case studies that demonstrate how ICTP has driven scientific progress and educational development in developing countries will be presented. The session will conclude with an engaging discussion on the future challenges and opportunities of using ICTP's expertise and resources to address pressing global scientific priorities.

ICTP and UNESCO
UNESCO first lent its support to ICTP in the 1960s, when the centre was still in its infancy. It continued through the 1970s and 1980s when UNESCO extended its funding for ICTP's research and training activities, and culminated in the mid-1990s when UNESCO became the lead administrative agency for the Centre. ICTP is now a UNESCO Category 1 Institute.
Although operating with significant autonomy, the programmes of this institute are an integral part of the UNESCO Natural Sciences Sector programme.
