Regional Capacity Building Workshop on Documentary Heritage Preservation for Memory Institutions in Africa: 15 - 17 June 2021, Mbour, Senegal

Dakar - UNESCO, through its Memory of the World (MoW) Programme, is organizing on 15, 16 and 17 June 2021, online and in presence, a regional workshop to improve the knowledge and techniques of memory institutions in sub-Saharan Africa in the preservation of documentary heritage, with a focus on disaster risk reduction and management.

This activity is part of the three-year project entitled "Preservation of Documentary Heritage through Policy Development and Capacity Building", supported by the Japanese Funds-in-Trust (JFIT) of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

The regional workshop will be conducted with the support of local, regional and international experts and partner organizations such as the International Council on Archives (ICA) and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).

The meeting also specifically aims to:

  • Promote the long-term preservation and resilience of documentary heritage in Africa;
  • Provide training to memory institutions to gain practical expertise on risk assessment measures for documentary heritage collections, facilities and their surroundings;
  • Provide a broader perspective by sharing experiences on the topic with partner organizations from different cultural heritage fields;
  • Train memory institutions to develop their own disaster preparedness, response and preservation plans.

This meeting follows two regional capacity building workshops for memory institutions focusing on disaster risk reduction, held in Bhutan in 2018 and Australia in 2019, for the benefit of stakeholders from South Asian and Pacific Island countries.
