Social and Human Sciences Program
Program Description
The Social and Human Sciences (SHS) Sector at UNESCO Cairo Office implements programs to help Egypt, Sudan and other Arab countries achieve Agenda 2030 and related national priorities by applying policy-relevant and high-quality social and human scientific research and knowledge, and by embedding ethical reflections. SHS promotes intercultural dialogue and skills, promotes inclusive urban development and engages young women and men, including through sports.

Program Achievements in 2020
SHS Program Achievements in Egypt specifically:
A Futures Literacy Lab-Novelty was held virtually during the period 21-24 July in cooperation with the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Egypt under the title “Egyptian Youth Rethink the Future of Wellbeing in 2050”.

Regional achievements, with participation of Egypt:
Urban inclusion:
Launch of the “Toolkit for Urban Inclusion in Arab Cities” during the 10th World Urban Forum. The Toolkit focuses on public participation, access to information, sport for youth inclusion, and human rights education.
Issuance of a pamphlet on “the role of local authorities in responding to COVID 19 outbreak: leaving no one behind”.
Virtual meeting of the Coalition of Arab Cities against Racism, Discrimination, Xenophobia and Intolerance to review the 10-point plan of action.
Ethics of science:
Organization of a series of virtual webinars and production of video messages on “Ethical Dimensions in COVID-19 Responses and Impact in the Arab region”.
Within the framework of global consultations on the draft text of the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, 3 youth consultations and 1 expert consultation were organized.
Webinar on Open science and the Decolonization of Science in cooperation with the Canadian National Commission of UNESCO and UNESCO Chair at the University of Victoria.
Youth:
Virtual consultation with Young Arab Climate Actors on knowledge needs in the area of climate change.
Online regional youth training program “Arab youth against stigma and discrimination amid COVID-19”.
Arabic language:
Celebration of World Arabic Language Day 2020 in cooperation with the League of Arab States.
