Project

Sustainable Product Design

To bring to life the importance of sustainability in every aspect of our lives, Filimon Diamantidis, a technology teacher from Athens, invites his students to design and build green products.

Since 2012, Filimon Diamantidis has been promoting sustainable development education based on the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. How could he make this learning simple, fun and effective for his students? Through project-based learning.

During their technology class, students at Psychico College Middle School (member of the Hellenic American Educational Foundation – Athens college) design and build products whilst considering the choice of materials, environmental impact and energy needed to build and use them. Successes so far? An eco-wallet, mobile phone case, eco lamp made from reused and recycled materials, green bioclimatic building, board game (ecopolis) and a solar oven.

Overseen by Filimon Diamantidis, the project is growing. Two more teachers have joined so that children can work in smaller groups. The next challenge? To promote ESD in other courses, and as part of a holistic approach to sustainable development across the whole school.
