UNESCO and the Brazilian Supreme Court sign agreement for new museum project
This project intends to transform the STF museum into a cultural centre of reference for promoting memory and education for democracy. Its objective is to safeguard and disseminate the history of Brazilian constitutionalism, the conquering of fundamental and human rights, and the STF.
The initiative, which involves the physical expansion, the development of the new exhibition project and the curatorial management of the Ministro Sepúlveda Pertence Museum, known as the STF Museum, will bring the Court closer to the public and allow for a better understanding of its history and the role it has played in implementing rights and protecting democracy.
Engaging in curation, museography, and collectively thinking about how we can increasingly bring justice closer to citizens carries excellent symbolism for us at UNESCO, especially in this contemporary Brazil that never ceases to challenge us.
Ms Marlova Noleto also emphasized that since this Museum has an open door to the street, it symbolizes what the STF Museum project represents. “It is on the streets that justice must be. Justice needs to serve citizens and the democratic rule of law,” she stated. “Today, we renew our commitment to telling the story of Brazilian constitutionalism and democracy.”
The cooperation agreement includes three axes:
- Expansion and structural adaptation of the STF Museum
- Renovation and design of the STF Museum's museography and display
- Management, curation, and maintenance of the STF Museum
This moment symbolizes the consolidation of a partnership of great importance to us and a shared commitment to preserving history, strengthening citizenship and promoting democratic culture.
The agreement was signed by the Director of UNESCO in Brazil, the President of the STF and Ambassador Maria Luíza Ribeiro Lopes, Adjunct Director of ABC.
