UNESCO and LG AI Research forge a landmark partnership to promote Ethics of Artificial Intelligence worldwide

In a significant collaboration, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and LG AI Research signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) at LG Science Park, Seoul, on November 24, 2023, to champion the responsible development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The partnership centers on promoting the ethical deployment of AI technologies, with a focus on human rights, transparency, and fairness.

The signing ceremony witnessed the participation of key figures, including Ms. Soohyun Kim, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok and UNESCO Representative to Thailand, Myanmar, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Singapore, Dr. Kyunghoon Bae, President of LG AI Research, Mr. Youchul Kim the leader of X-unit and Mr. Myoungshin Kim, the Principal Policy Officer at LG AI Research. 

UNESCO as a United Nations specialized agency has been instrumental in crafting the most extensive global standard for ethical practices related to artificial intelligence. In particular, 91Âé¶¹¹ú²ú¾«Æ·×ÔÅÄ developed a comprehensive international framework for the ethical development and deployment of AI technologies. The cornerstone of this framework is the protection of human rights and dignity, which is based on fundamental principles such as transparency and fairness. The ‘ was adopted by 193 Member States during UNESCO's General Conference in November 2021.

This pioneering collaboration represents a significant milestone in advancing AI technologies that contribute to humanity and sustainable development. The partnership aims to facilitate capacity building, the development of educational materials on the ethics of AI and promote awareness through impactful events.

The Director of UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau, Ms. Soohyun Kim, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in addressing the complexities of AI governance and ensuring its responsible and trustworthy development on a global scale.

Dr. Kyunghoon Bae, President of LG AI Research, expressed anticipation for fruitful outcomes through collaboration across various sectors, ensuring the ethical development of AI within a framework of global trust. 

This historic collaboration signifies a shared commitment to fostering the ethical development and deployment of AI practices, with both organizations actively contributing to the global discourse on the ethics of AI.
