UNESCO celebrates World Cities Day 2023

Since its creation in 2019, the UNESCO鈥檚 Cities Platform celebrates cities on the occasion of World Cities Day, on 31 October. This year, halfway through the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, the theme 鈥淔inancing a sustainable urban future for all鈥 represents an opportunity to highlight ingenious and future-proof urban initiatives, and collectively reflect on ways to ensure their sustainability and improvement. 鈥淚nvestment in local urban development policies, strategies and actions is crucial to tackling inequalities and encouraging sustainability, whether economic, social, or environmental,鈥 noted Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, in her message for World Cities Day 2023.

Through the activities and synergies between the eight programmes constituting the Platform, UNESCO encourages constructive cooperation between cities in order to unleash their full potential. 

In the light of World Cities Day 2023 and the upcoming 42nd General Conference, on 16 November, the UNESCO Cities Platform will participate in the Partnerships Hub by organizing a special event under the theme 鈥淭ogether, building sustainable cities for all鈥. This will mark an opportunity to highlight the valuable collaboration of UNESCO鈥檚 city programmes with non-governmental, local, national and regional actors in different parts of the world to design effective solutions to contemporary urban and global challenges, notably climate change and the digital transformation, which are adapted to each citizen鈥檚 needs.
