Funiushan UNESCO Global Geopark
“Thirteen different types of fossil dinosaur eggs have been discovered and are on display, including two very rare specimens”
Celebrating Earth Heritage
Funiushan UNESCO Global Geopark is located in Funiushan mountain area in Henan Province, China. The tectonic geology at Mount Funiushan reveals the Archean break-up and separation of the continental crust more than 2.5 billion years ago.
The geomorphic landscapes in the Funiushan UNESCO Global Geopark demonstrate tectonic movement – particularly a diversity of granitic geomorphic types in orogenic belts. Funiushan UNESCO Global Geopark is located in the east section of China Qinling Orogenic Belt, which was also the key part of the North China Plate carrying out underthrust, collision and convergence toward the Yangtze Plate in Paleozoic Era, and of continent-continent collision in Mesozoic Era. This diverse geomorphology includes the toothed granite mountain of the primary tectonic period, the laccolithic mountain of the extension period; the "Wuxingshan" landscapes of subduction granites; the unloading and break-up of the collisional granites; and the stone pillars and peak clusters of the crust-mantle mixed granites. The karst landscape formed on a base of carbonate tectonic rock with fracture belts of mylonitized marble.
As a typical representative of a continental orogenic belt, the well-preserved geological relics in the UNESCO Global Geopark gives a systematic focus on the Paleozoic Plate Structure, the trace of Mesozoic Continental Orogenic movement, Cretaceous Dinosaur-egg fossils groups, orogenic granite and karst landscape. The quantities and various types of rich dinosaur-egg fossil groups in the UNESCO Global Geopark are so unique that they rank in the top of the world.
Funiushan UNESCO Global Geopark features rich geological resources, exquisite and unique geomorphic landscapes, and colorful northern subtropical ecological landscapes.
