Action Line C3: Access to Information and Knowledge

At the heart of the World Summit of Information Society (WSIS) lies a commitment to crafting a knowledge society that is people-centered, inclusive and geared towards development. UNESCO鈥檚 approach focuses on four key pillars: ensuring freedom of expression, providing universal access to information and knowledge, respecting cultural and linguistic diversity, and ensuring quality education for all.
UNESCO advocates for Access to information and knowledge, where the internet plays an important role. It is not only essential for freedom of expression but also crucial for realizing rights related to education, social and economic development.
In line with the R.O.A.M-X principles (Human rights based, Open, Accessible to all, multi-stakeholder participation) for Internet governance, UNESCO works across all continents, including Small Island Developing States to foster an inclusive knowledge society where information flows freely, cultural diversity thrives and education drives positive change.
Advocating for an Inclusive Open Knowledge Society
In advocating for an open knowledge society, UNESCO leads open licensing, free from most licensing and copyright barriers. Supporting initiatives like the (GOAP), which provides a comprehensive overview of Open Access to scientific information worldwide, facilitating informed decision-making and collaboration among policymakers and advocates.
Additionally, UNESCO encourages the development and promotion of public domain information. UNESCO鈥檚 policy guidelines 鈥溾 serve as a roadmap for Member States to enhance access to information within their jurisdictions, promoting transparency and accessibility in knowledge dissemination.
Preserving Information for Future Generations
UNESCO is deeply engaged in initiatives aimed at preserving and transmitting information across generations. Through initiatives such as the , it safeguards valuable digital heritage. Emphasizing the importance of open, interoperable, and non-discriminatory standards, UNESCO also promotes Free Open-Source Software to manage information effectively in an era of emerging technologies.
