CRIDA lite in the Marico Biosphere Reserve
With the aim of increasing flow, improving water quality, increasing biodiversity and decreasing the impact of alien and invasive plant populations in the catchments of the biosphere reserve, a CRIDA-Lite was initiated.
Contexto
The Marico BR area¡¯s hydrology is influenced by dolomitic recharge zones in the south, with prominent water sources such as the Marico, Molopo, Molemane, and Elands Eyes. These eyes give rise to distinct river systems, each with unique ecological conditions. The area supports diverse vegetation and critical biodiversity conservation.
Acciones
CRIDA Step 1 and 2, have been implemented, in the so called ¡®Lite¡¯ version, a simplified implementation. The key challenges affecting the Marico¡¯s water resources and ecological health were identified and categorized into those that can be addressed locally and those beyond the Marico BR¡¯s control. A risk analysis was conducted to assess the likelihood, impact, priority, and rating of each challenge. Four potential scenarios were outlined to guide planning efforts: Scenario 1 ¨C Current State: Desert Storm, Scenario 2 ¨C Fizzle Out, Scenario 3 ¨C Willing but Still Unable, and Scenario 4 ¨C A Healthy Environment and Happy People. The level of concern and ecological thresholds that have already been crossed were assessed. Additionally, guidelines for creating a strategy for the Marico BR (CRIDA-LITE Step 3) were developed.
