Hermes Center
Overview of the organization
Hermes Center is an Italian NGO focused on digital rights. We monitor how the digital ecosystem affects the fundamental freedoms of citizens and produce software, research and advocacy. Hermes is an association founded in 2012 composed by technologies, lawyers and journalists. The association's experts have been consulted by democratic institutions on personal data, digital sovereignty, artificial intelligence, platform accountability, whistleblower protection, open data, and other topics related to the digital transition.
Project and activity overview
We recently worked on a position paper to clarify webscraping in AI and other contexts: https://edri.org/our-work/the-two-sides-of-web-scraping-when-data-collection-becomes-a-double-edged-sword/
During the AIAct debate, we raised awareness on the issue of facial recognition and the proliferation of deepfakes with the campaign https://dontspy.eu, and before that, the association was the Italian promoter of https://reclaimyourface.eu/.
An analysis of how AI is used for border control is available at https://protecht.hermescenter.org/.
(We are currently restructuring our website so that most of our updates and comments can be found at https://www.linkedin.com/company/hermes-center/posts/).
Tangential to AI, but related to digital rights: People in the association started https://globaleaks.org, https://ooni.org, and https://tracking.exposed.
