Dedicated App Girls (Garotas Applicadas)

Cross-Cutting Themes

The Dedicated App Girls (Garotas Applicadas) project, developed by the Associa??o Efigênia Vidigal de Educa??o e Cultura (Avec), seeks to promote the participation of girls and women in science and technology by equipping them with the confidence and technical skills necessary to thrive in STEM fields.

Targeting high school and ninth-grade students, primarily black and brown girls aged 13 to 17 from public schools, the initiative guides participants in developing mobile applications designed to address real-world challenges they have identified. The programme offers structured instruction in programming, personal development, leadership, business, and entrepreneurship through three-hour sessions held on Saturdays. Additionally, Discussion Circles with Inspiring Women provide mentorship and role models, fostering motivation and self-belief. A distinctive feature of the project is the involvement of psychologists, who lead discussions on critical topics such as affection, internet use among teenagers, self-esteem, and identity, contributing to the holistic development of participants.

All activities are offered free of charge and are made possible through the support of partners and volunteers. The project operates as a collaborative effort involving Avec, partner institutions, the local community, and the students themselves, working collectively to foster a more inclusive and diverse STEM landscape.
