MatematiQueer - Gender and Sexuality Studies in Mathematics Education
MatematiQueer is a research and university extension group founded in 2020 at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). It investigates the relationships between mathematics education and individuals who deviate from societal norms regarding gender, sexualities, and intersectionalities. The group challenges hegemonic discourses that portray mathematics as neutral and detached from social, cultural, and political contexts, which often exclude marginalized groups. Its key activities include research, university extension, and collaboration. The research focuses on three main areas: Critical Mathematics Education, Human Rights, and Social Justice; Gender Relations and Feminisms in Mathematics Education; and Sexual Minorities, Otherness, and Mathematics Education. Through extension, MatematiQueer promotes discussions on gender and sexualities in mathematics education, aiming to break binary and exclusionary paradigms. The group collaborates with over 200 members, including students, teachers, and researchers from diverse fields and institutions across Brazil.
MatematiQueer addresses significant challenges, such as the exclusion of marginalized groups (e.g., women, LGBTQIA+ individuals) from STEM fields due to stereotypes and societal norms. It critiques the myth that mathematics is a neutral, objective discipline, highlighting how this perspective perpetuates inequalities and limits who can produce, teach, and learn mathematics. As a result of its work, the group has fostered critical reflections on the role of gender and sexualities in mathematics education, encouraging educators to integrate these discussions into their teaching. It has also expanded the visibility of marginalized voices in STEM, challenging traditional paradigms and promoting inclusivity.
The practice benefits both the research community and broader society by contributing to the sociopolitical turn in mathematics education and advocating for social justice and equity. By addressing exclusionary practices and promoting diversity, MatematiQueer enriches the educational environment, empowering marginalized groups, challenging stereotypes, and redefining who can engage with and excel in mathematics. Its work fosters a more inclusive and equitable approach to mathematics education, benefiting society as a whole.
