About Fashionomics Africa

Fashionomics Africa is an initiative of the African Development Bank that aims to increase Africa’s participation in the global textile and fashion industry value chain. The initiative intends to support the development of micro, small and medium-sized businesses operating in the textile, apparel and accessories industry in Africa, with a focus on women and youth empowerment. The industry presents a unique opportunity to promote African culture and local know-how, in addition to supporting countries seeking to pursue industrialisation and to boost intra-regional trade.

Fashionomics Africa Masterclass in South Africa 2018

The third Fashionomics Africa Masterclass for textile, apparel and accessories entrepreneurs, tomorrow’s designers and startups was led by the African Development Bank Department of Gender, Women and Civil Society in partnership with Google Digital Skills for Africa, Nesta, Parsons School of Fashion and African Fashion International.

New Fashionomics Africa Digital Marketplace and Mobile Application

The African Development Bank’s flagship initiative, Fashionomics Africa, has launched the pilot phase of a digital marketplace to help Africa’s fashion designers, textile and accessories professionals connect with global markets.

The launch took place on 25 November 2019 at the Global Gender Summit, a gathering of more than 1,500 representatives from multilateral development banks, finance institutions, governments and private sector leaders in Kigali, Rwanda.

About the African Development Bank

The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group is a regional multilateral development finance institution established to contribute to the economic development and social progress of African countries that are the institution’s Regional Member Countries (RMCs). The AfDB was founded following an agreement signed by member states on August 14, 1963, in Khartoum, Sudan, which became effective on September 10, 1964.

Angola- The Sumbe Water Supply, Sanitation and Institutional Support Project

The water supply project significantly changed the lives of many families in the suburbs of Sumbe, the capital of the Cuanza Sul province. People who previously traveled miles to access water today have the precious liquid just meters from if not directly in their homes. Cases of acute diarrheal diseases considerably reduced since people started to consume treated water, the prices fall drastically, jobs were created at the Sumbe water treatment utility. In addition, the program also benefitted institutions such as schools, health centers, markets, and public institutions, which now have a 24 hours a day clean water supply.
