The 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions was a pioneer in establishing links between creativity and sustainable development. In the Convention鈥檚 holistic views, culture generates direct social, economic and environmental benefits, thereby making development interventions more effective.
In 2011, UNESCO successfully advocated for the first . Since then, a growing number of countries have integrated culture into their national development plans and policies. These actions paved the way for the reference to culture in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In this celebratory year, UNESCO furthers its advocacy at MONDIACULT 2025 to establish culture as a stand-alone goal in the post-2030 Agenda.
