24th Consultation Meeting of the Pacific Heads of Education Systems (PHES)

The Pacific Heads of Education System (PHES) was launched in 1977 then known as the Education Directors’ Meeting composing of 15 Pacific States and one Associate Member, which are Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia (Federated States of), Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Tokelau (Associate Member), and Vanuatu. Its main purpose is to identify common solutions, facilitate SIDS-SIDS (Small Island Developing States) or South-South and triangular cooperation, support one-another’s professional development, and promote standards for education and education outcomes for the realization of the global and regional goals and targets for education.
The 24th Consultation Meeting of the PHES, entitled “Building Resilience in Education Systems and Harnessing the Pacific Regional Collaboration” was co-hosted virtually by UNESCO and Papua New Guinea's Ministry of Education from 27 to 30 July 2021. Heads of education systems, concerned government officials, representatives from development agencies, regional organizations, CSOs and university representatives discussed successes, challenges and opportunities pertaining to areas including basic education quality and inclusion, teachers’ professionalism, education data and benchmarking, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), and higher education in the context of COVID-19 and beyond. Also held was the CONFINTEA VII Consultation in efforts to promote literacy skills and basic education for adults. The outcome document summarizes the discussions and decisions made.
