7 Youth Teams from Southeast Asia to Start Their Journey in Implementing Solutions for Water Challenges at UNESCO-Designated Sites

On 18 January 2024, UNESCO Jakarta welcomed 25 teams, comprising 96 young water leaders from Southeast Asia to be part of “UNESCO Water Resilience Challenge 2023: Youth Action for Water”. Throughout the two phases of the program, the youths were challenged to propose innovative and creative solutions for water problems within UNESCO-designated sites in their respective countries. Beyond the challenge itself, the programme aims to enrich the experience of the youths by providing them with comprehensive training and mentoring sessions led by experts spanning various disciplines. Topics covered included sustainable water management, inclusive stakeholder engagement, and nature-based solutions for biodiversity and ecosystems. This multifaceted approach is designed to broaden their perspectives and equip them with the necessary skills to tackle the challenge effectively.

We see you (youth) not just as leaders of tomorrow but as vital change-makers of today, in fighting inequality, championing sustainable development, and building a world where peace thrives

Maki Katsuno-Hayashikawa, Director of UNESCO Jakarta

The 25 teams were selected among more than 150 teams from across Southeast Asia registered during the registration period. In the last phase of the activity, the teams were challenged to pitch their solutions to the panels of judges resulting in 7 selected teams to be given chances to test and implement their innovative designs and solutions in the UNESCO-designated site of their choices. In the next phase, UNESCO Water Resilience Challenge 2024, a more refined selection process will identify the best teams that will have the opportunity to showcase their ideas for water challenges on the global stage, specifically at the 10th World Water Forum scheduled to take place in Bali in May 2024.
