Become peer-educator of media and information literacy!

Recent statistics from the International Telecommunication Union show that nearly 60% of the world鈥檚 population are using internet to connect with other people, to share information, and to get the latest international, regional or national news. But how many of them have a sustainable media and information literacy training to click wisely and not get lost in the immense amount of information and data on the internet or in social media? How many know how to hold media and digital communication platforms accountable for their content?

UNESCO invites all students and teachers worldwide to participate in an online event on 18 March 2022 to learn more about media and information literacy. The Media and Information Literacy Forum and Exhibition will share knowledge to innovate, collaborate and inspire others to become . Such approach relates to the thrust of the Dubai Expo 2020 to bring together nations and peoples.

Media  and  information  literacy  is a key set  of  competencies  to help  people  maximize  advantages of getting information from the internet and to minimize  the risks. To help teachers and students with this challenging task, UNESCO promotes a new way of living and engaging, (Second Edition of the UNESCO Model Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for Educators and Learners).

Enhancing  media and  information  literacy  among  learners  and  all  citizens  requires  that  educators  themselves  become  media  and  information  literate. In so doing, media and  information  literacy can lead to impact on the society at large. Collaboration among the international development community is needed to maintain the momentum.

This is why it is necessary to reinforce people鈥檚 critical competencies through media and information literacy. We must permanently place media and information literacy on the international development agenda.

The Dubai Expo 2020 is an excellent platform to promote media and  information  literacy given that the world is participating in the 鈥渕aking of a new world.鈥

The event has three parts:

  1. A virtual exhibition projected on-screen including media and information literacy inspiring resources (actions, video, graphics, case studies).
  2. A two-hour online forum for teachers and youth among media and information literacy experts/practitioners.
  3. Social media outreach to foster exchange on innovative practices and collaboration between teachers/professors and their students as peer-educators of media and information literacy.

UNESCO鈥檚 push to achieve media and information literate societies recognizes that media and information literacy in formal education is a necessity. UNESCO and stakeholders around the world insist that it鈥檚 time to popularize media and information literacy by everyone and for everyone. This is critical to build peace and to tackle disinformation, misinformation and hate speech. We can accelerate the progress to realize this goal when media and information literacy fortifies freedom of expression, protecting human rights, supporting diversity, equality, and promoting intercultural dialogue and interreligious dialogue.
