The “Behind Food Sustainability” exhibition, developed by the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, Venice (Italy), as part of Venice to EXPO 2015 initiative, is now on display in multiple locations around Italy. Visitors to UNESCO designated sites, which are engaged in promoting sustainability and safeguarding natural heritage on a daily basis, will be able to learn more about these issues and how they play out on a global scale.

Following its launch on 5 May 2015 at Palazzo Zorzi, premises of the UNESCO Office in Venice, various copies of “Behind Food Sustainability” have been put on display in UNESCO designated sites around Italy. The exhibition looks at the main challenges that affect food sustainability on a global scale, encouraging visitors to think more closely about their immediate surroundings and about the importance of natural and cultural diversity in facing these challenges. 

The first copy of the exhibition was inaugurated in the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano Biosphere Reserve in July. The reserve, which was inscribed in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) of the Man and Biosphere Programme (MAB) in June of this year, is located in the Tuscany and Emilia Romagna regions, in an area that marks the climatic boundary between continental and Mediterranean Europe and contains close to 70% of the total species present in Italy. It represents a prime destination for many tourists throughout the summer and autumn months. Visitors can explore the sustainability themes put forwards by the exhibition in multiple locations across the reserve. 

In August, the exhibition traveled to southern Italy, where it is currently on display at the Circeo National Park, an established Biosphere Reserve located 100 km south of Rome on the Tyrrhenian coast and a popular tourist destination that plays host to a range of environmental education activities, and at the Sila National Park in Calabria, which joined the WNBR of the MAB Programme in 2014 and where the exhibition, currently housed in the old sawmill, is set to make a number of stops in different venues.

Until 10 October 2015, the exhibition will also be on display in the Botanical Garden in Padua. Padua’s botanical garden, founded in 1545 as a garden of simples, is a World Heritage site of immense scientific and cultural value. The Biodiversity Garden is a new museum within the site that hosts almost 1,300 species and recreates the planet’s major ecosystems.

The “Behind Food Sustainability” exhibition was inaugurated in Padua on 12 September 2015, with welcome speeches by Professor Rino Rumiati, representing Giuseppe Zaccaria, Rector of Padua University; Marina Buffoni, Councilor in representation of Flavio Bitonci, Lord Mayor of Padua; Marco Costamagna, member of the Board of Directors of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo; Philippe Pypaert, Coordinator of the Science unit of the UNESCO Venice Office. The exhibition, produced in co-operation with the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo and the Nuovo Museo dell’Orto Botanico Università Degli Studi di Padova - Centro di Ateneo Per i musei, will run until 10 October 2015. 

In early October, the exhibition will also be inaugurated in Longarone at the “EXPO delle Dolomiti”, which will be the first of various stops within the Dolomites World Heritage site, with its beautiful and diverse mountain landscapes and high rates of seasonal tourism.

The exhibition will go to Turin to coincide with the 3rd World Forum on Local Economic Development in October and make a final stop in the Po Delta National Park, which also joined MAB in June and boasts high levels of biodiversity and an extensive range of habitats, with local communities engaged in agriculture, fish farming and the tourism industry.

The 4 versions of the exhibition on display in UNESCO sites in Italy were produced with the support of the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea.
