Breaking the ice: ocean research community welcomed in Barcelona
Barcelona City Council authorities and representatives of the Fundacio Nevagcio Oceanica Barcelona (FNOB) have gathered at Barcelona’s historical City Hall to welcome the international scientific community ahead of the 2nd International Ocean Research Conference.
In their welcome remarks, both Dr. Wendy Watson-Wright, Executive Secretary of the IOC of UNESCO, and Maite Fandos, President of FNOB and Deputy Mayor of Barcelona for Quality of Life, Equality and Sport, highlighted the conference’s large scope – with over 650 participants from 76 countries – as well as its groundbreaking focus on connecting science to other important stakeholders.
Dr. Watson-Wright called on scientists, policymakers and the civil society to work together to deliver the best science, the most efficient policies, and the highest level of public awareness possible in the pursuit of a healthy, productive ocean. In her concluding remarks, Ms. Fandos emphasized FNOB’s environmental engagement and pointed to the Barcelona World Race as a clear and exemplary statement to the sailing community that sport is also an opportunity to contribute to the protection and care of the ocean.
The event also saw a keynote speech on the last decade of developments in ocean research, delivered by Dr. Mike Roman, President of The Oceanography Society and Co-Convener of the 2nd IORC. With 5 world-renowned keynote speakers, 5 panels, 9 workshops, 14 theme sessions, and multiple parallel events, the Conference will provide critical guidance to the international community on the needs, developments, and management solutions for the next decade in ocean research and governance.
The morning keynote lectures and panels will be webcast live every day from 09:30 to 13:00.
