Bulgarian football legend Hristo Stoichkov honored at UNESCO

On 19 March, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, hosted the famous No. 8 and former Captain of the football team of Bulgaria, Mr. Hristo Stoichkov. Mr. Stoichkov, who accumulated titles throughout his career 鈥 the European Golden Shoe in 1990, the European Golden Ball in 1994, the World Cup Golden Boot in 1994, three times Champion of Bulgaria with his club CSKA Sofia, 5 times Champion of Spain in the Barcelona team, winner of the Champions League in 1992 - came to share his experience and his career on the occasion of the release of a documentary film about his sporting life.

The film "Stoichkov" was organized at the initiative of the Permanent Delegation of Bulgaria to UNESCO and the Bulgarian Cultural Centre in Paris, in presence of the Director, Borislav Kolev and the Producer, Dimitar Gochev. "Sports bring us together, and football is one of the most popular sports in the world. It is our role, at UNESCO, to help sport give the best of itself as a force of positive emotions and an instrument of social cohesion. These values 鈥嬧媙eed to be embodied in emblematic figures, and that is why I am pleased today to welcome Hristo Stoichkov, the famous number 8, who is number one in the heart of all Bulgarians, " said the Director-General.

"Number 8 has always brought me luck," added Mr. Stoichkov, "it symbolizes the infinite." He expressed his availability to put his experience and reputation to the service of UNESCO's programmes and said he was determined to continue spreading the values 鈥嬧媜f sports, in particular through his commitment to talented young people in Bulgaria and beyond.
