Teachers and schools from the Veneto region are invited to participate in the pilot phase this fall of the inquiry-based science education project, “Ark of Inquiry: Inquiry Awards for Youth over Europe”. Funded by the European Commission and involving 13 project partners from 12 countries, the project aims to create a “new science classroom”, one which would provide more challenging, authentic and higher-order learning experiences for pupils, using the discourse of science and working with scientific representations and tools. Deadline: 25 September 2015.

This fall, the pilot phase of this exciting project will begin. Teachers and schools around the Veneto region are encouraged to take part in this phase of the initiative that will enable them to actively engage and share teaching tools with science teachers and other stakeholders, such as scientists, museums, teacher educators, and parents, from all over Europe.

The selection of the teachers and their schools for the pilot phase will be made based on the following criteria:

1.    Teacher(s) with good knowledge of English language, both reading and writing

2.    Teachers and school policies with interest in inquiry based science education approaches and methodologies

3.    Teachers and school policies with positive attitude towards innovative methods of teaching and learning using new technologies

4.    Teacher(s) with basic experience using computers

5.    Schools equipped with a classroom or lab with personal computers connected to internet

6.    Science teachers from both primary and secondary schools are encouraged to apply

Selected candidates should be available to participate in a short, 1-2 hour introductory session to be held on Wednesday, 7 October 2015 starting around 15:00 (to be confirmed) at the premises of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, Venice (Italy).

Participants may also be asked to participate in either an individual interview session and/or a focus group session, to be organized in November 2015. All participating teachers will be expected to complete three (3) inquiry-based science activities in their classroom during the months of October-November from a list of over 50 activities which will be provided at the introductory session, after they have been familiarized with the project and educated on its process and purposes.

All participating teachers will receive a certificate of participation in the pilot phase of the project from UNESCO as well as be eligible to have expenses from the related activities reimbursed in an amount not exceeding €50.
