The United Nations is partnering with the Nippon Foundation to offer a number of three-month fellowships in ocean governance and four-month fellowships in strategic needs. The trainees will be based in the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea in the Office of Legal Affairs at United Nations Headquarters in New York (USA). The deadline for submitting applications is 30 March. The successful candidates will be announced by the end of May 2025.

To be eligible, Nominated candidates must:

1. be between the ages of 25 and 45;
2. have successfully completed a first-level university degree;
3. be from a Small Island Developing State;
4. be government officials from a Small Island Developing State who are actively working on ocean affairs and critical issues related to sustainable development of oceans and seas;
5. must contribute after completing this programme directly to their country’s formulation and/or implementation of ocean affairs and law of the sea policies and programmes;
6. must be free of all non-fellowship obligations during the entire study period, unless otherwise authorized by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea.
