Call for Expression of Interest: Advisor on UNESCO’s Exhibition “Polyfunctional architecture to enhance the experience of UNESCO Designated sites”

UNESCO designated sites are a unique and interconnected global network including thousands of outstanding places and communities that, individually and collectively, are committed to fostering the diversity of cultural and natural heritage as a crucial resource for humanity. From 2018 to 2022, UNESCO, through its Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe (based in Venice), launched an interdisciplinary initiative to explore the actual and potential role of visitor centres in contributing to the objectives of the different UNESCO designated sites such as , Biosphere Reserves and UNESCO Global Geoparks, through the organisation of a series of regional workshops for Europe and the production of digital reports.
Drawing on the results achieved and wide interest generated by the initiative, the UNESCO Regional Bureau is planning to host a programme of activities during the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (10 May – 23 November 2025). The prospective exhibition Polyfunctional architecture to enhance the experience of UNESCO Designated sites (provisional title) aims to explore the architectural aspects of the conceptualisation, design, and operation of visitor centres and other similar facilities in UNESCO designated sites in relationship with the surrounding social, cultural and natural environment, notably in the light of UNESCO’s fundamental values and overarching objectives to build peace, foster intercultural dialogue and contribute to equitable and sustainable development.
The venue of the proposed physical exhibition will be the premises of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, located in the heart of Venice (Italy). Contingent on the availability of funds, and after the closure of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, the Exhibition is planned to be traveling to other locations, possibly including the Headquarters of UNESCO, in Paris (France).
UNESCO is seeking expertise, in the form of either an individual consultant, a team of experts, a not-for profit or private organisation, to support the concept development, design and overall planning of the exhibition “Polyfunctional architecture to enhance the experience of UNESCO Designated sites”.
Please send your expression of interest via email to Laura De Stefani l.destefani@unesco.org, copying Costanza Fidelbo c.fidelbo@unesco.org, by clearly indicating in the subject of the email: Advisor for UNESCO’s Exhibition “Polyfunctional architecture to enhance the experience of UNESCO Designated sites”. Expressions of interest will only be considered that are sent following the above procedure, completed with all required information, and received by 28 May (23:59 CET).
