Call for Proposals: Online dialogue on “Ethics of science and technology”
- Introduction
Since its involvement in promoting international reflection on the ethics of life sciences in the 1970s, UNESCO continues to build and reinforce linkages among ethicists, scientists, policy-makers, judges, journalists, and civil society to assist Member States in enacting sound and reasoned policies on ethical issues in science and technology.
As the COVID-19 pandemic has put states, public health systems, economies, societies, communities, and individuals under utmost pressure, many questions have arisen about the norms and criteria that could help sound decision-making process in response to the emergency.
In as much as the COVID-19 is a “global health” challenge, it indeed also raises fundamental and difficult questions pertaining to human rights, social justice, codes of ethics, and environmental ethics namely the challenges of climate change.
UNESCO is organizing a series of webinars and online meetings (July- Sept 2020) on Ethics of Science and Technology to engage youth, research and policy communities in the global conversations and to come up with recommendations in the Arab region. UNESCO is seeking for an implementing partner based in the region.
- Proposal
Universities, research centers and civil society organizations, which have a proven expertise in the area of ethics for science and technology in the Arab region can apply.
A short proposal (in English) should include:
- A CV or a lead researcher
- The team (members’ CV and the role)
- Key questions to be addressed in the following thematic areas:
- Ethics of AI
- Ethics in the time of Climate change
- Research Ethics
- Outreach to mobilize research communities in the Arab region
- The budget table together with possible technical and in-kind contribution
- Submission date
A proposal should be submitted to UNESCO Beirut Office (cj.donabedian@unesco.org) no later than 15 June 2020.
