Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, 8-9 December 2016
From 8 to 9 December 2016, the eleventh session of the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict will take place at UNESCO Headquarters, Room XI.
The Committee, composed of representatives from 12 States Parties to the Second Protocol to the Hague Convention of 1954 for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, will examine a variety of matters including requests from Georgia and Mali for the granting of enhanced protection, and requests from Libya and Mali for international assistance from the Fund. The meeting will also explore a fundraising strategy.
With culture moving to the frontline of war in the last decades, cultural property suffers both collateral damage or a direct target for belligerents. This destruction strikes at societies over the long term and weakens the foundations for peace. In this context, the 1954 Hague Convention and its two (1954 and 1999) Protocols help tackle the increasingly complex situations on the ground. As of today, 127 States Parties have ratified the 1954 Hague Convention, and 69 States Parties have ratified its 1999 Second Protocol.
