Common Frameworks on ICT in Education Teacher Training and Digitally Competent Teachers
UNESCO’s Knowledge Societies Division, with the support of the European Commission, hosted the meeting on ‘Common Frameworks on ICT in Education Teacher Training and Digitally Competent Teachers’ from 13 to 14 January 2016 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
This meeting provided a forum for the sharing of common frameworks for ICT in Education teacher training. Discussions focused on areas of digital competence - knowledge, skills and attitudes for the confident and critical use of ICT for employment, learning, self-development and participation in society - addressed in national teacher education programmes.
The outputs of the discussions will be used as contributions to the revision of the ICT Competency Framework for Teachers () to be undertaken in the 2016-2017 period. In addition, the discussions will also contribute to the development of the EU Reference Framework for ‘digitally competent teachers’ being developed by the European Commission Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS). National best practices in using the (ICT CFT) were also discussed in the meeting.
This meeting was organized thanks to the support of the European Commission in the framework of the Project ‘Uptake of Open Educational Resources (OER) supporting the ICT CFT’.
The UNESCO ICT CFT outlines a set of competencies that teachers need to integrate ICTs into their practice and professional development to advance student learning. Key for UNESCO in this domain is to support the use of OER-based teacher training materials for contextualizing the ICT CFT. OER are educational resources that incorporate a license facilitating reuse and adaptation without first requesting permission from the copyright holder.
The meeting brought together representatives of the Ministries of Education of Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Lithuania, Norway, Slovenia and Spain, as well as experts from the European Commission in Brussels, the European Commission Institute for Prospective Technologies Studies in Seville, and the European SchoolNet.
The meeting was organized by the Communication and Information Sector of UNESCO as part of its Programme and Budget for 2014-2015 to empower Member States through universal access to information and knowledge. It responded to the expectations under the overarching objective of building inclusive knowledge societies.
