A comprehensive technical report on the impact of increased flash floods frequency and their correspondent sedimentation problems on the water supply intakes (clogging) along the Nile in Egypt
The report started August 2020 and shall include a review of the flash floods of the wadi system of both eastern and western desert, as a main source of sediments. The main focus will be given to the main flash flood events that affected the water intakes. Mitigation techniques commonly used inside the wadi system and its effect on decreasing sediment yield will be illustrated in the addition to the recommended actions to mitigate the effect of sedimentation at the intake location will be summarized based on stakeholders’ feedback and interviews conducted by the study. The main objectives of this activity is to define the real and actual faced problems due to the increase of sediment concentration in the Nile course, to outline the Flash floods of the wadi system of the eastern Desert draining in the Nile course and to propose analytical views on possible mitigation measures based on interviews with stakeholders and measures used in other countries.
The report is being prepared in cooperation with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation in Egypt and related Water utility institutions in Egypt, a technical report on impact of increased flash floods frequency and their correspondent sedimentation problems on the water supply intakes (clogging) along the Nile in Egypt prepared and a Policy Brief targeting National Stakeholders (mainly: water utilities managers responsible for water supply plants) prepared/ delivered
This report is implemented in Egypt and is focused on Egypt. It is part of UCO/HYD expected contribution to UNPDF-Egypt/ Planet Group 2020 workplan and it shall contribute to the national plans of the Ministry of Water Resources and irrigation for the sustainable management of flash floods water resources.
