International Women's Day 2021: which commitment today?

Under the high patronage of UNESCO in partnership with AUF

March 8th, 2021

Organized by Dr Guila Clara Kessous, UNESCO artist for peace, Ambassador for Peace of the Universal Circle of Peace Ambassadors (Geneva), this online conference was the opportunity to take a look at the commitment to women's rights today.

Gender equality is one of the two cross-cutting priorities of UNESCO. To find out more about our activities:

This series of interventions opened by Dr Guila Clara Kessous was intended to be the expression of solidarity, in order to defend these rights and reaffirm the initiatives essential to their unconditional recognition.

We must enable women, all women, to dare to speak, to go against that injunction "Be smarter, be quiet" and provide them access the exact same rights as men, not as women, but as human beings

For Prof. Slim Khalbous, rector of the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie, it is necessary to proceed with a change of mindset supposing concrete actions on the ground as for the board of the AUF at the level of the education and university system which since 2020 has reached perfect parity at 50/50.

For Denis Mukwege, Nobel Peace Prize 2019, women fought for a century to obtain, for example, the right to vote in France, given to men in 1848 and in 1944 to women. Women can no longer wait 100 years to achieve gender equality. We need men and positive masculinity; we need them to engage in this fight that will not only benefit women but society as a whole.

For Isabelle Rome, magistrate, author, senior official for equality between women and men of the Ministry of Justice, human dignity must remain the guide for the application of any rule of law. Committing to women's rights means allowing everyone, without distinction, to have access to these rights, including those for whom it is most difficult, whether they are deprived of their liberty or in a situation of disability. .

For François Molins, Attorney General at the Court of Cassation, the role of justice in gender equality is twofold. It affects both the access of women to positions of responsibility in the judical system and the improvement of the management of violence against women. This involves the detection of violence, the protection and punishment of perpetrators, the prevention of recidivism and support for victims, which includes information on the fate of their complaint.

Our society has three pillars: the protection of the environment, a united society and equality. This is the society young people want to build and I have faith in them.
