Ramallah – 14 March 2016. It is with great pleasure that UNESCO Ramallah Office is extending its warmest congratulations to Ms. Hanan Al Hroub for winning the Global Teacher Prize. This is a wonderful recognition, not only for the deserving winner Ms. Al-Hroub, but for all dedicated teachers in Palestine. The teaching profession in Palestine is a challenging assignment which deserves to be praised and rewarded – at such special occasions as well as every day.

Teachers everywhere face many challenges, yet they are the key to securing a sustainable future and building national capacities for learning and societies based on knowledge, values and innovation. They are the foundation of society`s future generation – in Palestine as well as in the rest of the world.

Ms. Al Hroub, who grew up in Betlehem and is a teacher at the Samiha Khalil Secondary School in Ramallah, has dedicated herself to improving the lives of children who are exposed to violence and traumatized by conflict. As the author of the book `We Play and Learn`, she is a recurring speaker at conferences and teacher training seminars. She embraces the slogan `No to violence` and developed her own pedagogical approach that she applies in her job every day. She devotes special attention to providing a safe learning environment in the classroom with a unique focus on the individual needs of children, while developing a respectful and affectionate relationship with her students. Not only is she an inspiration to her colleagues, but to teachers worldwide.

The Global Teacher Prize is an annual award granted by the Varkey Foundation to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to his or her profession. The Prize highlights the importance of educators throughout the world and that their efforts deserve to be recognized and celebrated.
