The Gabonese government and UNESCO organized the first Executive Council of the Gabonese National Commission for UNESCO on the 17th February, 2016. The session has seen the presence of around 100 people representing ministerial departments, experts and other partners active in the Organization’s fields of competence.

The Minister of national education and vocational training, Mr. Florentin Moussavou, organized and chaired the first Executive council of the National Commission for UNESCO today in Libreville. The session's objective is to revive and revitalize the Commission through structure and means of action necessary to carry out the Gabon – UNESCO's Cooperation Program for the coming years.

The Cooperation Program, under review during the meeting, was jointly elaborated by UNESCO Libreville office, ministerial departments with the contribution from national experts. The Program takes into account the priorities of the government, as put forward in the Gabon Emergent Strategic Plan (PSGE) and those of UNESCO as laid out in its Operational Strategy for Priority Africa (2014-2021). Made up of 19 axes, the program marks a new momentum of cooperation between Gabon and the organization. The program covers all the sectors of activities: education, science, culture, communication, as well as cross-cutting themes like culture of peace and youth.

The Head of UNESCO Office in Gabon, Mr. Vincenzo Fazzino indicated that, following evaluation, « the axes of cooperation, against which there are expected results and indicators, will enable the identifying of activities in line with UNESCO and Government's entities programs. Those activities will be included in the respective annual budget for the coming two years ».

During the meeting, a road map was adopted to complete and approve the Gabon – UNESCO Cooperation program, for 2016-2017, with its action plan. The participants formulated recommendations on the cooperation program document and also on the legal status of the National Commission.

The Gabonese National Commission aim is to promote UNESCO's actions and goals and insure its links with the government and relevant national entities. The National Commission is composed of 3 bodies:

• General Meeting
• The Executive Council
• The Permanent Secretariat

Chaired by the Minister of national education and vocational training, the Executive Council is composed of an inter-ministerial committee. Members are ministers who's activities are related to UNESCO's domain of competence.
