COP29 Ministerial Roundtable on greening education and enhancing climate literacy metrics

A roundtable on greening education will be hosted by the Ministry of Science and Education, Azerbaijan and co-organised by the OECD and UNESCO. The meeting will also serve as the second Annual Meeting of the Greening Education Partnership. It will focus on highlighting the role of greening education in achieving the three major priorities of the COP29 Presidency – nationally determined contributions (NDCs), financing and country level implementation.
In addition to highlighting the important role of the Greening Education Partnership, special attention will be given to the role of international assessments targets and metrics in driving climate change education. The OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) has been pivotal in driving educational reforms worldwide through its competency-based frameworks and metrics. PISA now aims strengthen and extend its work in this field, to encourage policy reforms that align education with sustainability goals. Building on previous rounds, this will be achieved through the development of a new global metric on climate change literacy in PISA 2029, along with several supporting indicators based on reports from principals, teachers and students.
The collaboration between the COP Presidency, the Greening Education Partnership (GEP) and PISA can help establish actionable targets for climate education and create tools to assess progress at both national and individual student levels. The roundtable aims to build broad support for these new metrics and initiate an inclusive consultation process with all stakeholders contributing to the COP, as to ensure that we measure what truly matters, while considering different perspectives.
