Costa Rican youth commit to a culture of peace through theatre

This workshop promotes a culture of peace and intercultural coexistence, and involves the participation of young people in vulnerable situations, including those belonging to migrant populations.

Theatre is a tool for social transformation. With the support of UNESCO, 35 young people from San José, Costa Rica, are participating in a theater workshop that began on Saturday, July 1st. This workshop promotes a culture of peace and intercultural coexistence and includes the participation of young people in vulnerable situations, including those belonging to migrant populations.

For the third consecutive year, young people between the ages of 12 and 17 from the Cristo Rey and Sagrada Familia neighborhoods in San José, Costa Rica, have the opportunity to participate in a theater workshop organized by the Teatro Espressivo Cultural Association (ACTE) in support of the work of the Sonrisas de Niños Association (ASONI).

The theater workshop for a culture of peace and intercultural coexistence is also supported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Embassy of Spain in Costa Rica, and the Municipality of San José.

This initiative provides a space to promote coexistence based on creativity and free expression, with the aim of developing in young people skills related to theatrical disciplines, such as emotional and physical intelligence, collaborative work, and the formulation of imaginative and innovative solutions.

Through this initiative, it can be observed how artistic and cultural education is a powerful tool for promoting social inclusion and the construction of sustainable and peaceful communities, in line with the objectives of the , under the premise of leaving no one behind.

About this initiative

It is taught by a team of performing arts professionals and is based, among other resources, on the content of the guide "," developed jointly by the Ministry of Public Education of Costa Rica, UNESCO, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The workshop will take place through weekly sessions between July and November of this year. As a result, it is expected that the young participants will collectively produce and perform a high-quality theatrical production, which will be presented at the Teatro Espressivo for the enjoyment of the beneficiary communities.
