Culture Programme

Program Description
UNESCO’s Culture Programme is firmly anchored in the cultural conventions which provide the principles for cultural policy development and serve as a platform for international cooperation in safeguarding heritage and promoting cultural expressions for sustainable development. UNESCO Regional Bureau for Sciences in the Arab States, through its Culture Unit, assists the member states with the promotion and implementation of the UNESCO culture conventions through policy support, capacity building, and partnership development. The UNESCO in Cairo implements several operational projects with extra-budgetary resources. This includes the assistance to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) launched as a follow up of the UNESCO International Campaign to Save the Monuments in Nubia.
Achievements in 2020
Under the Culture Programme, the capacity building workshops on the UNESCO culture conventions, in particular, the 1954 Hague Convention and its Protocols, the 1972 World Heritage Convention, the 2015 Museum Recommendation were organised with UNESCO assistance in close cooperation with the Egyptian authorities, contributing to the enhanced capacity of government officials, cultural professionals, civil society and other stakeholders for the effective implementation of these Conventions and Recommendation in Egypt.
In relation to the 2005 Cultural Diversity Convention, assistance was provided to the contemporary art exhibition held at Historic Cairo organised by Art D’Egypte, a social enterprise in Egypt, and the awareness-raising workshops to engage youth and the local community in the revitalization of conservation skills for the historic centre of the city.
Within the framework of the project “Strengthening National Capacities for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in Egypt for Sustainable Development” under the UNESCO Global ICH Capacity Building Programme, several capacity building workshops were organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture in Egypt in 2019. These workshops resulted in the formation of a corps of officials, experts, and community leaders equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for the implementation of the ICH Convention and the community-based ICH inventorying methodology. The project also supported the review of ICH policy and the development of the educational kit.
