Director-General in Bulgaria to explore Countering Violent Extremism through Education and Culture
On 16 December, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, is undertaking a visit to Sofia, Bulgaria, on the occasion of the international conference, entitled 鈥淐ountering Violent Extremism: New Security Agenda for Education and Culture鈥, co-organized by UNESCO and the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria.
The event will bring together high-level participants and representatives of the United Nations to explore the perspectives for countering violent extremism through the protection of cultural heritage and diversity, as well as educational initiatives.
The Director-General will address the opening session alongside Dr Solomon Passy, President of the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria, H.E. Aleksander Kwasniewski, former President of Poland, and H.E. Bill Richardson, former Ambassador of the United States to the United Nations.
Key participants at the conference include Ms N鈥橠iaye Ramatoulaye Diallo, Minister of Culture, Crafts and Tourism of Mali, Ms Meglena Kuneva, Deputy Prime Minister for European Policies Coordination and Institutional Affairs of Bulgaria, Dr Jehangir Khan, Director of the UN Counter Terrorism Implementation Task Force and the UN Counter Terrorism Center, Mr Lakhdar Brahimi, Special Advisor of the Director-General of UNESCO and Dr Markus Hilgert, Director Ancient Near East Museum, Berlin State Museums 鈥 Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.
