Director-General condemns killing of journalist Alex Ogbu during protest in Nigeria
Paris, 02 February—The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has urged an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the killing of journalist Alex Ogbu who was shot in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, on 21 January.
“I condemn the killing of Alex Ogbu,” said the Director-General “I call on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the journalist’s death and do all that is necessary to ensure that journalists can do their work without fearing for their lives.”
Alex Ogbu, a print and web reporter for RegentAfrica Times, was shot dead while police dispersed a demonstration of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria nearby.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
