The Director-General Promotes Education for Sustainable Development in Morocco

On 8-10 June 2013, Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General, will undertake an official visit to the Kingdom of Morocco, to open the 7th World Environmental Education Congress with Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, President of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection.

The 7th World Environmental Education Congress is held in Marrakesh under the patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the leadership of Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa. The Congress is organized by the Secretariat of the World Environmental Education Congress and the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection.

Participants in the Congress include actors for environmental education from across the world, including also Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, Director-General of the Islamic Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), Mr Achim Steiner, Executive Director of UNEP, Mr Jan Eriksen President of the Foundation for Environmental Education, and the sociologist and philosopher, Mr Edgar Morin.
In the course of the official visit, the Director-General is expected to meet Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, President of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection.

Irina Bokova is also to meet with Mr Mohamed Amine Sbihi, Minister of Culture, and Mr Fouad Douiri, Minister of Energy, Mines, Water and the Environment, with whom she is expected to sign an agreement on the creation of a Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, as a Category 2 Centre under UNESCO鈥檚 auspices. 

On the occasion of the visit, the Director-General is also expected to sign a Cooperation Programme between ISESCO and UNESCO for 2013-2015, covering specific activities in their areas of competence, with a view of achieving their shared strategic objectives for the benefit of their common Member States.
