In response to the ongoing crisis in Southern Lebanon, which forced many schools and vocational institutions to close, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) launched the Education Resilience Initiative. This effort, developed in collaboration with UNESCO Beirut Office, Center for Educational Research and Development (CRDP), UNICEF, and Education Cannot Wait (ECW), aims to equip teachers with the skills necessary for effective digital learning. The program addresses the urgent need for continued education in regions affected by ongoing instability, ensuring that students' educational journeys remain uninterrupted.
The initiative has effectively trained over 2,500 teacher s in digital learning methods. During the first phase, more than 1,325 teachers from Southern Lebanon participated, and in the second phase, over 1,200 teachers from the Beqaa region were involved. This training is vital for improving teachers' abilities to provide quality education online and to adapt their teaching methodologies to meet the demands of a digital classroom.
Empowering Teachers with Digital Learning
Teachers who have participated in the program report significant improvements in their teaching practices. Rola Fawwaz Chamoun, from the Khiyam Martyrs Vocational Institution, shared, "The training was incredibly beneficial. Our methods have evolved, and we can deliver information much more clearly to our students. Even if it's not 100%, the clarity is around 80% now." Her experience highlights how the initiative has helped teachers to communicate more effectively with their students, fostering a more interactive learning environment.
Ismail Mrad, Principal of Bent Jbeil Vocational Institution, emphasized the practical skills gained, saying, "We learned how to structure assignments online, create groups, and send lessons directly to students. Before this, we struggled with basic digital tasks and couldn't achieve this with just WhatsApp." These skills are essential for creating a seamless digital learning experience, allowing teachers to engage students in innovative ways.
Nada Markouz, a teacher at Marjayoun and Balat Public Schools, emphasized the broader impact of the initiative on educational equity: "We are committed to delivering proper learning to our students. They have the right to education like any other student, and this training helps us fulfill that promise." Her testimony underscores the program's role in leveling the playing field for all students, regardless of their circumstances.
The digital learning program, led by UNESCO Beirut Office, empowers teachers to harness digital tools and platforms like MS Teams to conduct an inclusive remote learning. It also provides strategies to promote self-directed learning and independence among students. By offering access to digital resources, e-books, and digital libraries, the program enables teachers to create engaging and interactive learning experiences that captivate students' attention and foster a love for learning.
The Importance of Digital Learning in Crisis
In times of crisis, digital learning is not just an alternative but a necessity. It ensures that education remains uninterrupted and accessible to all students, regardless of their circumstances. This initiative exemplifies UNESCO's unwavering commitment to fostering an education system that is resilient, inclusive, and future-ready.
The Education Resilience Initiative stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in education, offering hope and opportunity to students and teachers alike. As we continue our efforts to ensure accessible learning for all students across Lebanon, our commitment to empowering every student to achieve their full potential, despite the challenges they face, remains steadfast.
"Through initiatives like this, UNESCOaims to transform not only the way we teach but the way we reach every student, no matter the challenges. By equipping teachers with digital tools and innovative strategies, we are supporting Lebanon in its journey toward an inclusive and future-ready resilient education system, ensuring that no student is left behind."
