Enhancing the Capacity for the Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH) Management and Sustainable Development in the Arab States
Reflecting the wealth of UCH and interest in its protection through international cooperation, the number of states parties from the Arab region to the 2001 Convention for the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH) has been increasing steadily. The Scientific and Technical Advisory Body (STAB) for the UCH Convention that met in Algeria in 2019 recommended enhancing the capacity building activities for the UCH management in the Arab States.
Building on the successful 1st session last year, UNESCO organised the 2nd session of the online Training of Trainers (ToT) on the Underwater Cultural HeritageÌý(UCH) ManagementÌýand Sustainable Development in the Arab States from 8Ìýto 10ÌýMarchÌý2021. It was held in partnership with the Centre for Maritime Archaeology and Underwater Cultural Heritage (CMAUCH) at Alexandria University in Egypt where UNESCO Chair in Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH) was formally established in October 2020.
The 2nd session focused on the topics on UCH project design, application of digital technologies and maritime intangible cultural heritage. The UCH specialists (15 participants: 12 men and 3 women) from 7 Arab states (Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Sudan, and Tunisia) attended the 2nd session and discussed the Action Plan for the UCH Education and Training in the Arab region, identifying priority actions at national and regional levels.
