Frutillar to represent Chile at the world meeting of creative cities

From 11 to 17 June, the UNESCO Annual Meeting of Creative Cities will take place in Poland, with Chile represented by the small town of Frutillar. The event will be held in the cities of Krakow and Katowice. This is an unprecedented participation for a Chilean delegation, meaning Frutillar will represent not only itself but also the Los Lagos region and the country as a whole. It marks Chile's first involvement among the 180 Creative Cities around the world, and specifically among the 30 dedicated to music.
Amanda Milosevich, Regional Secretary of Culture, Arts, and Heritage of Los Lagos, highlighted that 鈥渢hanks to the valuable commitment of the National UNESCO Commission, a delegation from Frutillar, led by Mayor Claus Lindemann, will attend the annual UNESCO Creative Cities meeting. The objectives of the trip are primarily to position the city and the region as an exceptional place for the creation of artistic content and residencies, socio-cultural innovation, social integration, and the development of new pedagogical methodologies to meet the needs of the 21st century. It is hoped that this will also explore international collaboration with other creative cities pursuing similar action plans,鈥 said the Regional Secretary.
Meanwhile, Frutillar鈥檚 Mayor, Claus Lindemann, explained that 鈥渢he action plans Frutillar has committed to are based on a participatory agenda, developed through a process that identified the city鈥檚 needs and how the creative industry can significantly contribute. This agenda relates to strengthening education, fostering social integration among the city鈥檚 residents, producing local artistic content, highlighting and valuing traditional crafts, gathering information for decision-making, and participating in an international collaboration network,鈥 he noted.
Although the UNESCO nomination took place last November, many of these programmes are already underway in Frutillar. Tom谩s Cortese, Executive Director of the PLADES Foundation, the organisation that has led the bid and supported the Creative City of Music designation, emphasised that 鈥渋n education, we are making an effort to position creativity as an essential skill in the development and training of our children and young people. Specifically, this is being done through the mentoring of teachers in a social innovation prototype co-financed by Corfo and implemented by the Daem, PLADES Foundation, and CCE.
In the same vein, the Core Skills and World Voice programmes, executed by the British Council and PLADES Foundation, have been developed, along with the leadership mentoring programme led by Hidden Giants, and the Puelche International Forum on Learning and Creativity. Additionally, we aim to strengthen the area of music education in schools through the 鈥楢ppreciation of Chilean Music in Schools鈥 programme, in collaboration with the Regional Secretary of Culture, Arts, and Heritage,鈥 he explained.
