Gender Equality starts with you
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated structural inequalities in the world, by increasing the risk of school dropouts, domestic violence, unemployment and misinformation, affecting mostly women and girls. These inequalities threaten to wipe out progress achieved on gender equality in recent years.Â
However, this crisis also gives us an unprecedented opportunity to capitalize on innovation and grassroot movements to ensure that gender equality dimensions are part of the solution at all levels of the society. On the occasion of International Women's Day 2021, UNESCO decided to showcase the stories of women who inspire people by their actions and courage to become designers of change in their community. just like or Dr Azra AkÅ¡amija, who started a global initiative to inspire people to create their own masks, or Abiona Mataranyika, who made history at only 22 years old by cecoming the first female President of the Student Representative Council at one of Zimbabwe's oldest and most prestigious universities.Â
