Governance of groundwater resources in transboundary aquifers (GGRETA)
The GGRETA project, focused on the Ocotepeque-Citalá Transboundary Aquifer, seeks to strengthen the institutional capacity for the governance of groundwater resources.

About GGRETA
The project "Governance of groundwater resources in transboundary aquifers (GGRETA)" is implemented by UNESCO's Intergovernmental Hydrological Program (IHP) in three transboundary aquifers representative of different natural and socioeconomic conditions. Also, this aquifers are in regions of potential conflicts for the water.
GGRETA is supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
Stages of the project
Phase III of GGRETA aims to strengthen the institutional capacity for the governance of groundwater resources, at the local and transboundary level, to facilitate the processes of structured regional dialogue. The general objectives are:
- Strength the institutional and technical capacity for groundwater governance in basin organizations and regional centers, and strengthening the participation of local stakeholders and cooperation between countries.
- Strengthen regional cooperation in order to establish the basis of regional strategies for transboundary aquifers.
- Improve the data on the monitoring of the quality of transboundary groundwater resources.
- Improve communication, public awareness, capacity and skills on transboundary aquifers and diplomacy of shared groundwater resources.
Associated activities
In order to strengthen the institutional capacity for the governance of groundwater resources, here are the following activities we work on.
Results of the project
- Strengthening of the institutional and technical capacity in terms of governance of groundwater, reinforcing the participation of local actors and the cooperation of the countries of Africa, Central America and Central Asia.
- Strengthening regional cooperation with the aim of laying the foundations for regional strategies for transboundary aquifers.
- Enhanced communication, public awareness, capacity and skills on transboundary aquifers and shared groundwater resource diplomacy.
