H.E. Dr. Nath Bunroeun of Cambodia Attends Sub-Regional Consultation on the Global Education Cooperation Mechanism

His Excellency, Dr. Nath Bunroeun, Secretary of State, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, participated in today’s virtual Sub-Regional (Southeast Asia, East Asia and the Pacific) Consultation Meeting on the Global Education Cooperation Mechanism (GCM) organized by UNESCO Bangkok. Several high level officials from ministries of education, civil society organizations and private partners across the region also attended the event. They shared their views on the prioritization of SDG 4 as countries recover from the current COVID-19 pandemic, as well as effective initiatives contributing to progress toward SDG 4 as agreed at the .

The consultation aims to (i) reach a shared understanding of the existing problems, suggested solutions and an improved GCM proposed in the current draft scenario paper (V3) and (ii) receive specific inputs from this Sub-region to ensure clear linkages between global- and regional-level cooperation in education is improved and better coordinated, so that the improved GCM will contribute effectively to accelerating progress towards SDG 4 targets at the country level.

During the plenary, Dr Nath Bunroeun highlighted the importance of complementing APMED’s work in helping Member States achieve SDG 4 by working closely with sub-regional entities such as SEAMEO Innotech. On the question of who should be represented at the global and regional structures that would enable the global education cooperation mechanisms to provide more coordinated, efficient and support for countries to accelerate progress towards SDG 4, Dr. Nath Bunroeun made a very important point of having National SDG 4 Coordinators to be well represented, adding that this will ensure high level commitments from Member States. UNESCO Phnom Penh team also shared the successful implementation of Basic Education Equivalency Programme (BEEP) in Cambodia, how it contributes to achieving SDG4, its success factors and the way forward to strengthening the programme.

This consultation is organized following the launch of a multi-stakeholder Working Group in January 2021, a series of consultations with Working Group members, the SDG-Education 2030 Steering Committee, multilateral partners, as well as the donor community took place. Inputs from participants will support the development of draft scenario paper to accelerate the progress towards SDG 4.
